Some interesting facts about the famous snake boat race of Kerala

The backwaters of Kerala are usually serene and peaceful, but once a year, they become a 'sports arena' for the legendary snake boat race called Vallam Kali. The boat races are held in autumn, during the festival of Onam. The boats are narrow and canoe-like, but unlike the canoe they are about hundred feet long and can carry up to 110 rowers! One end of the boat is is designed to look like a serpent's hood, hence the name 'snake boat'.

Keeping your School Neat and Clean

Cleanliness is next to godliness. Every creature of this world keeps himself and its surroundings neat and clean. As far as our school is concerned, we have a very good tradition of keeping it and its surrounding clean. It has been a way of our life much before the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched. We, the stakeholders of the school, are proud of this tradition.

First of all, we create very little mess in our school. Whenever we see any waste product around us, pick it up and put it into dustbin. Our dustbins are actually recycle bins which recycle the waste products. Whenever we celebrate any birthday, we plant saplings and grow trees. We give that sapling name of the birthday boy or girl. We maintain green environment around us.

We are the inspiration for other institutions to follow. It is great that students are studying and keeping the environment green simultaneously. We should indulge in environmental protection for our survival. The day is not far when human being will be an extinct species if we do not improve and take steps to protect the environment.

A cricket match

Last night, I saw an exciting T-20 match between Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab. It had all the elements of a suspense thriller. The Punjab team won the toss, elected to bat and lost three valuable wickets before they had put then twenty-five runs on the board. Maxwell, their star batsmen, was out for a duck. The entire team could manage a paltry 112 runs. I thought Delhi Daredevils were going to have cakewalk. But their start was even more disastrous than that of their rivals, for at one stage, they were 6 for 3. However, at this juncture, Rishabh Pant stepped in and gradually improved the situation. Pant played patiently and waited for loose balls to score. The fact that the Daredevils were facing only a modest total also helped them. Pant saved any further dramatic collapse and steered his team to a great victory. It was a low-scoring match but full of great thrills.

Planning for picnic

Isha: What a lovely weather! Shall we go to the park for a picnic?
Rohan: Sounds great! Let's take some snacks along.
Isha: I can make cheese and tomato sandwiches. And I have a bottle of lemonade at home.
Rohan: That's lovely. I'll bring a packet of chips and two muffins.
Isha: Please bring a frisbee and a soft ball to play with.
Rohan: Sure. Can I bring my dog Snoopy? He would love to play in the park.
Isha: Yes, do bring him. But put him on a leash.
Rohan: Wait a minute....
Isha: What is it, Rohan?
Rohan: Did you hear that? I heard the sound of thunder.
Isha: Oh no! It's going to rain.
Rohan: What a spoilsport!

The lazy birds

Rinku and Minki were two little birds who lived together in a nest. They were both very lazy and made excuses to avoid doing any work. One cold winter morning, the breeze was very chilly. Rinku and Minki were feeling very cold. They noticed that there was a hole in their nest. But neither made an effort to repair the nest. They made excuses and waited for each other to cover the hole. Soon, it started snowing. Now, the hole grew bigger as snowflakes entered the nest. Rinku and Minki shivered with cold. Yet they did not move from their place or make any effort to block the hole. Even after it had become dark, they sat shivering all night and by the time it was morning they had frozen to death.

Clever Montu

Montu was a very clever and witty boy. One day his mother sent him to buy fruits and vegetables. After he had bought some vegetables he went to a vendor selling apples. He asked for half a kilo of apples. The fruit vendor was a dishonest man. He weighed only 400 gm apples. Montu noticed this and pointed it out to the vendor. But the vendor said that he had weighed the apples correctly. Besides, a slightly less weight would be easy for Montu to carry. Montu was not to be outwitted. He paid the vendor for only 400 gm apples. When the vendor said he had paid less, Montu calmly replied that he had paid the right amount. Besides, lesser money would be easier to count and the vendor could easily carry it in his pocket!

Giving is important

Once a king went out to meet his people. Many people stood along the streets to see the king and receive gifts. At one point, the king came across a beggar. The beggar was carrying a bowl with some grains of rice in it. He requested the king to give him alms. The king was moved to pity to see the poor beggar. He put his hand in his pocket to take out something. Suddenly he had an idea and said to the beggar,"Give me something first." The beggar, who was expecting rich gifts, was annoyed at the king's words." What can a poor beggar give to the king?"said he, and threw a grain of rice from his bowl at the king. In return, the king threw one gold coin in his bowl and rode away. The beggar felt sorry that he ha as thrown only one grain of rice. In life, we have to give before we can receive anything.

Noise pollution

Our environment is degrading rapidly and we are ourselves to blame for it. The polluted air, water and deafening noise are a result of our own activities. Even today we are not aware about the harmful effects of noise pollution, which is all around us.
The honking of vehicles, the noise made by loudspeakers, marriage parties, industrial and construction noise, the noise from processions, the noise of aeroplanes disturbs us everyday. It strains our nerves and even disturbs our sleep. Sometimes we are unable to think properly when their is too much noise around. We find out hard to concentrate on our studies.
Constant exposure to noise can damage our eardrums. People living in big cities are exposed to loud sound day in or day out. They do not what real peace is. They do not get rest during the day or a sound sleep at night. This affects their work efficiency. Such people remain irritated and tense and this may lead to high blood pressure.
We must create an awareness about noise pollution. There are several ways by which we can reduce noise pollution. We should not blow the horn of our vehicles unnecessarily. We should not disturb our neighbours by playing too loud music. We can stop bursting firecrackers on festivals. We should plant more trees as trees help to reduce noise pollution. We should all work together to make our environment peaceful.

My role in a play

This year, our house Annual function on 23rd December. We decided to have dances and plays as the main items for it. I participated in'Robinhood' a play in English. It dealt with the activities of Robinhood's early life. We got dressed in nice shirts with black waist jackets. Since I was the hero, I wore a red jacket with a red bow and took a shining sword in my hand.
The stage had the backdrop of a forest scene. Our teachers has placed bushes, branches and even small trees here and there. The whole stage looked like a forest. We came on the stage and took our positions for the final show. We were excited. The curtains went up and the play began with some light music in the background.
We all played our parts very well. None of us stumbled on the stage. Neither one of my friends nor I forgot the that we had been given to play. I managed the rescue scene very well. I enjoyed fighting against the kidnappers of the king's daughter. I was confident and acted as a real Robinhood. When the play was over, people cheered us up. All of us felt very happy.
The show was a grand success. All the guests were very happy to see the wonderful performances of the children. We were given special prizes for the wonderful perfomance. I was adjudged the best actor of all. My parents congratulated me on my success as an actor.

Pollution

Pollution is the worst man made scenario. The word pollution was derived from the Latin word 'pollute' which means to make dirty. It affects the ordinary living of the living things on this planet. Pollution can be many types like - Air pollution, Water pollution, Noise pollution, Soil pollution etc.
Air pollution is increasing day by day beacause of the growing number of automobiles, release of our poisonous gases, smoke from industrial companies etc. in the atmosphere. The air we breathe every moment causes several lungs disorders.
In this way, soil and water pollution is also caused by the mixing up of the sewage water in drinking water, some dangerous agrochemicals such as pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, solid wastes etc. Noise pollution is also increasing day by day with harmful impact on the activity of human or animal life.
We should try our best to maintain the healthy environment in order to get complete relief.
